In 1998, Sunita was selected for NASA’s space travel program, after which she underwent rigorous training and went to space for the first time in December 2006 on the Space Shuttle Discovery [STS-116] on December 9, 2006.
The International Space Station (ISS) mission set a record for staying in space for 195 days, during which they conducted four spacewalks totaling 29 hours and 17 minutes.

In 2012, Sunita Williams went to space for the second time, flying on July 15, 2012, under the Soyuz TMA-05M mission. She stayed in space for 127 days during this mission and served as commander.
In this mission, she also did a spacewalk and conducted scientific experiments, achieving significant accomplishments and setting records. Sunita Williams set the record for the longest time spent in space by a woman, which was 195 days.
She, later broken by another woman, set the record for the woman who did the longest spacewalk in space at 50:40. In 2012, she became the second woman to become the commander of the space station and the first woman to run a marathon in space.
